Code of Conduct

To ensure a safe, respectful, and welcoming environment for everyone, all patrons of the Bunbury Public Library, the Withers Community Library, and the surrounding areas agree to comply with the library's Code of Conduct and Conditions of Entry, as set out below.

Code of Conduct

To support a safe and welcoming environment, all patrons are expected to:

  • Respect the rights of others to feel safe and welcome, including staff and other patrons.
  • Follow all reasonable requests from library staff to modify inappropriate behaviour.
  • Leave the library when requested by a staff member.
  • Handle all furnishings, collection items, and equipment with care.

  • When visiting the City of Bunbury Public Libraries, patrons must not:

    • Engage in disorderly, indecent, offensive, or unlawful behaviour.
    • Cause fear, distress, or discomfort to staff or other library users.
    • Assault, threaten, intimidate, insult, or harass any person, physically or verbally.
    • Create excessive noise that disrupts other users.
    • Smoke or vape, or consume or be visibly affected by alcohol.
    • Consume, administer, sell, or be visibly affected by illicit substances.
    • Use audio or visual recording devices, including taking photos or videos, without prior approval and the explicit consent of all persons involved.
    • Take photos or videos of individuals without their consent.
    • Distribute petitions, surveys, or promotional material, unless part of an endorsed Council activity.
    • Bring animals into the library, except for certified guide, hearing, or assistance animals.
    • Leave personal items unattended at any time.
    • Wear attire that is inappropriate, unsafe, or displays offensive, discriminatory, or explicit images or language.
    • Enter without wearing appropriate footwear, or remove footwear at any time.
    • Climb on or sit on shelving, counters or other surfaces not designed for seating.
  • Use of library computers, Wi-Fi, and other technology must comply with library policies and applicable laws.

    Users of the City of Bunbury Public Libraries’ Wi-Fi and computer facilities are subject to the following conditions:

    • Do not transmit, request, obtain or advertise offensive, derogatory or unlawful material.
    • Do not transmit or make available restricted material to a minor.
    • Material displayed on any screen in any City of Bunbury building must be appropriate for a public or general community setting.
    • Wi-Fi sessions are of a designated length and at the end of this time you will be automatically logged out.
    • The library’s internet service is filtered and some sites may be blocked.
    • City of Bunbury Libraries is not responsible for accuracy of information obtained online.
    • City of Bunbury cannot guarantee security of confidential information which may be entered by customers onto websites or web-based forms.
    • Understand that the City of Bunbury Libraries cannot be held responsible for breaks in service resulting from technical problems outside our control.
    • Users of this service shall not have any claim against the City of Bunbury arising from loss associated with damages, obligations or liabilities directly or indirectly relating to the use of this service.
    • Sound must be muted or headphones must be used.
    • Secure your laptops and other items when in the library. The City of Bunbury is not liable for theft of personal items.
  • The City of Bunbury Libraries welcomes and encourages children of all ages to use its facilities and services.

    For the safety and comfort of all library patrons, children under 12 years of age must be accompanied and actively supervised by a responsible adult at all times.

    Active supervision requires that the responsible adult must be within sight of their child at all times. Library staff are unable to undertake supervision responsibilities when children and young people enter the library. Responsible adults visiting the library are asked to observe the following guidelines:

    • Actively supervise your children at all times whilst using library facilities, including use of the public computers.
    • Keep food and drinks away from all library materials and computers.
    • Hot drinks are not allowed in the Children’s area.
    • For safety reasons, children are required to use the furniture provided appropriately for its intended use and are not to climb on.
    • Enforce that library shelves are not to be climbed on, over or under.
    • Please tidy areas you have used before leaving.

    Children aged 12 years and over may use the library unaccompanied, provided appropriate behaviour is maintained.

  • CCTV cameras operate throughout the library. By entering the library, you acknowledge that your behaviour may be recorded.
