Local Government Elections

Local government elections are held periodically to elect Councillors and the Mayor to represent the community and make decisions on behalf of the City.

Elections are conducted in accordance with the Local Government Act 1995 and the Local Government (Elections) Regulations 1997, and are administered by the Returning Officer.

Roles to be Elected

At each election, voters may be asked to elect:

  • Councillors, who collectively form the Council and are responsible for setting the strategic direction of the City and making policy decisions.
  • The Mayor, who presides at Council meetings, represents the City at official functions, and provides leadership to the Council.

Voting in Local Government Elections

Voting in local government elections is conducted by postal vote.

Eligible electors will be sent a voting package by mail, which includes:

  • ballot papers,
  • instructions for completing your vote, and
  • a return envelope.

Completed ballot papers must be returned by the close of voting to be counted.

Enrolment

To vote in a local government election, you must be enrolled on either:

  • the State Electoral Roll, or
  • the Local Government Owners and Occupiers Roll (if eligible).

Enrolment eligibility and deadlines are set by legislation and apply prior to each election.

Standing for Election

Nominations to stand as a candidate for Council or Mayor open prior to each election.

Prospective candidates must meet eligibility requirements and submit a completed nomination form within the advertised nomination period.

Information about nominations, candidate eligibility and election timelines is published closer to each election.
