For the first time the WA Mixed Ultimate Championships will be coming to Bunbury. Ultimate (frisbee) is a unique team sport that uses a flying disc and combines elements of soccer, netball and American football.
This fun sport is a great cardio workout that also improves hand-eye co-ordination and develops new skills such as the backhand, forehand and overhead throws.
What makes Ultimate Frisbee most unique is the fact it is completely self-refereed in all levels of the game, even at World Championships.
It is also one of the only sports to be played as a mixed gender sport at an elite level.
On the weekend of the 8 and 9 of September mixed gender Ultimate clubs from across the State will be travelling to Hay Park in Bunbury to compete at the WA Mixed Ultimate Championships.
This event is the qualifying event for the Australian Mixed Ultimate Championships.
There will be more than 12 clubs competing at the event with only the top two qualifying for the national competition to be held in October.
The event will be hosted by the local Bunbury Ultimate Club and sponsored by the City of Bunbury.
“On behalf of the Bunbury City Council I welcome all competitors and their families to Bunbury and encourage them to explore and experience this wonderful region of ours,” Mayor Brennan said.
“We are honoured to have such a unique sporting event taking place on our doorstep and I know the community will also be excited to witness these elite athletes battle it out at Hay Park.”
The event expects to bring more than 220 competitors and officials travelling from Perth, Mandurah, Esperance, Busselton, Bunbury.
At least 95 per cent of competitors will be attending from outside of Bunbury.
Based on Tourism Research Australia’s calculation that on average a sports tourist will spend $273 per person per day, this will translate into an economic benefit of close to $308,108.
Media are invited to attend a photo opportunity at 4pm Thursday 16 August at Hay Park Central. Please advise if you are able to attend by no later than midday the same day.
