Bunbury Basketball Association (BBA), with support from the City of Bunbury, is leading the Bunbury Community Courts Stadium project to design, construct and operate a new indoor multi-court facility at Hay Park.

Interest and participation in all sports, including basketball, continue to grow in Bunbury and the South West, and it is crucial that we address the evolving needs of our community.

We know there is community support for more indoor courts in Bunbury as participation rates continue to rise and current options for training, development sessions, and games remain limited.

Initially the project considered expansion of courts at South West Sports Centre to meet the growing demand. However, a more financially feasible option was identified in a standalone facility to be operated by the Bunbury Basketball Association (BBA) at Hay Park.

A parcel of land bounded by Socceroos Place has been earmarked for the facility, with funding secured from the State Government for four indoor multipurpose courts, compliant with both basketball and netball regulations.

BBA is currently working through the project scope with the aim of delivering a six-court facility.

There is currently close to $30 million allocated to this community project with $25.74 million from the State Government plus a little over $3 million from the City.

With Ochre Project Services appointed as project manager and SITE Architecture Studio engaged to lead the concept design, the project reached a key milestone in August 2025 when the design was presented to the South West Design Review Panel. Following refinements from that review, development approval was secured in January 2026.

BBA and its specialist consultants will then work through the detailed design to find efficiencies and ensure the project delivers the best value for the community. From there, the project will go to market for final design and construction.

Alongside the new courts, the City is also planning upgrades to the surrounding roads, car parking and pedestrian connections to make it safer and easier to get around the precinct. As these plans take shape, we’ll be talking with the community, user groups and key stakeholders to make sure the outcomes work for everyone who uses Hay Park.

The facility will provide additional opportunities for year-round participation, growth and player pathway development, meeting future demand in Bunbury and the region.

Further, the facility will have the ability to host a variety of sporting activities and events, including netball, volleyball, and wheelchair sports – just to name a few – making it a community asset.

The inclusion of a show court with grandstand seating will allow BBA and the City to attract nationally accredited events such as Basketball Australia’s national championship tournaments with the potential for thousands of visitors to descend on Bunbury and the region.

South West Sports Centre is a City-owned and managed facility and will continue to be an important asset for Bunbury. Additional courts at the BBA facility will free up SWSC courts for other sports and opportunities.

We will continue to provide updates on this exciting project with our community.

This project is part of the WA Government’s PlayOn WA, an exciting initiative to deliver 2,030 community infrastructure items across WA by 2030.
