Bunbury’s new winter program invites community to embrace the cooler months

The City of Bunbury has launched Mookaroo-k Goomburrup – Bunbury Winter Events, a new three-month program of activations, events and experiences designed to bring the community together and enliven the City Centre throughout winter.

Running from June through August, the program features more than 40 events and activations across Bunbury’s City Centre, including live music, food experiences, cultural events, creative installations, markets, and family-friendly activities.

The program – available this week at locations across the city – showcases a curated mix of community-led, business-led and City-supported events that celebrate creativity, culture and connection during the traditionally quieter winter period.

Mookaroo-k is the Noongar word for the coldest season – a time marked by rain, longer nights and gathering together. Goomburrup is the Wardandi Noongar name for the Bunbury area, a place that has long been a seasonal gathering place. Together, Mookaroo-k Goomburrup honours the spirit of coming together on Wardandi Noongar Boodja during winter.

The dual naming of the program was developed in consultation with local Noongar language specialists and endorsed by the Greater Bunbury Elders Group.

Bunbury Mayor Jaysen Miguel said the program was about giving the community and visitors more reasons to get out, connect and enjoy everything Bunbury had to offer during the cooler months.

“Winter in Bunbury is something to be embraced, not endured,” Mayor Miguel said.

“This program is about celebrating what makes our city special – our creativity, our local businesses, our culture and our community spirit – and bringing people into the City Centre to experience it all.

“From live music in our City Centre venues to food experiences on Victoria Street, markets in Queens Gardens to cultural exhibitions at BRAG and the Museum, there is something for everyone across the three months.

“We’re proud that this program has been developed in collaboration with our community – local businesses, artists, musicians, community groups and cultural leaders have all contributed to shaping what Mookaroo-k Goomburrup will be.”

A headliner of the program is the Bunbury Big Weekender – three days jampacked with community activations, entertainment, and local experiences running from Friday 5 to Sunday 7 June across the City Centre, Hands Oval precinct, and Bunbury’s waterfront.

Highlights across the three-month program include:

  • Always Good Nights – intimate live music pop-ups transforming spaces along Victoria Street into stunning venues showcasing WA’s best songwriters
  • NAIDOC Week 50th Anniversary – the City proudly supports NAIDOC Week 2026, celebrating the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples
  • Winter film festival and shows – at Bunbury Regional Entertainment Centre
  • Winter Warmers – escape the winter weather at the Bunbury Museum & Heritage Centre with seasoned storytellers and experts sharing the lesser-known tales of Bunbury’s histories
  • Live music, trivia and winter delights – spanning venues including Froth Bunbrewery, the Rose Hotel, Mojo’s Kitchen & Bar and other City Centre locations
