The South West Japan Festival returns in 2026, bringing two weeks of Japanese-inspired events, workshops, performances, cuisine and cultural experiences to Bunbury and the wider South West region.
Now in its ninth year, the festival celebrates the longstanding friendship between Australia and Japan, including the strong relationship between Bunbury and its Japanese sister city, Setagaya City. The 2026 festival also recognises the significant 50-year milestone in Australia–Japan relations, providing an opportunity to celebrate the enduring cultural, community and people-to-people connections between our two countries.

Festival Highlights
Floating Lantern Festival
Date: Saturday, 19 September 2026
Time: 3.00pm to sunset
Location: Friendship Gardens, Queen's Gardens
Enjoy an afternoon of cultural activities before decorating and launching a lantern onto the inlet at sunset. Visitors can also experience traditional Japanese culture through kimono displays, themed stalls, food vendors and family-friendly activities. Pre-purchase of lanterns is essential.
Bunbury Matsuri Day
Date: Sunday, 20 September 2026
Time: 9.30am to 4.00pm
Location: Queen's Gardens
The festival's signature community celebration features Japanese workshops, cultural activities, live performances, artisan stalls and authentic cuisine in the beautiful surrounds of Queen's Gardens.
About the Festival
Now in its ninth year, the South West Japan Festival celebrates Japanese culture through a diverse program of events including workshops, exhibitions, dining experiences, performances and community activities.
2026 is a particularly special year for the festival as we recognise the 50-year milestone of Australia–Japan relations and celebrate the enduring friendship and cultural connections that have developed between our two countries.
The festival also highlights the strong relationship between Bunbury and Setagaya City, which have been sister cities for more than 30 years. Through the festival, these international relationships are brought to life through community participation, cultural exchange, education and shared experiences.
