The event takes place at Payne Park on the first weekend of November, where families, community groups, sporting groups, schools, and businesses come together. Teams consist of 10-17 members who fundraise throughout the year and then gather to celebrate their efforts. The event is designed to bring the community together to celebrate cancer survivors, remember loved ones lost to cancer, and empower everyone to fight back against the disease.
Participants walk around the oval for 24 hours, symbolising the relentless battle that those affected by cancer face every day. The 24-hour format of the event is significant as it reflects the continuous nature of living with cancer. Each team is allocated a tent site where they can rest and regroup between laps, creating a supportive and communal environment.
Relay for Life Bunbury offers a carnival-like atmosphere, making it a family-friendly event with activities and entertainment for all ages. There is live local entertainment throughout the event, providing a festive and uplifting atmosphere. Participants are encouraged to dress up in fancy costumes, adding to the fun and camaraderie of the event. Food trucks offer a variety of delicious options, ensuring that everyone is well-fed and energised.
Two key ceremonies highlight the emotional and inspirational aspects of Relay for Life Bunbury. The Cancer Survivors Morning Tea celebrates those who have survived cancer, honouring their strength and resilience. It’s a moment of joy and gratitude, recognizing the progress made in the fight against cancer.
The Candlelight Ceremony, held in the evening, is a poignant time to remember those who have lost their battle with cancer. Participants light candles and place them around the track, creating a beautiful and solemn tribute to loved ones.
As this is the year of the Olympics this will be the theme for the event. We encourage all teams to go for gold with their fundraising and encourage them to dress and decorate their tent site with the Olympic theme. There will be mini-Olympic games for teams to participate in.
The goal for the 2024 event is to raise $200,000. These funds are crucial for the Cancer Council of WA to continue its life-saving cancer research, state-wide prevention programs, and support services for thousands of families affected by cancer each year. Every dollar raised brings us closer to a world where cancer no longer threatens the lives of our loved ones.
