Vale David Smith OAM Former Mayor of the City of Bunbury

It is with great sadness that the City of Bunbury acknowledges the passing of former Mayor David Smith OAM on 16 April 2026, aged 82.

On behalf of the City, Mayor Jaysen Miguel extended his sincere condolences to David’s wife and current Deputy Mayor, Tresslyn Smith, and their children Matthew, Nicholas and Penelope.

"David was a passionate advocate for Bunbury who dedicated decades of his life to serving this community,” Mayor Miguel said.

His contribution to our city – as a councillor, a member of parliament, and as Mayor – leaves a lasting legacy that has helped shape the Bunbury we know today.

David served as Mayor of the City of Bunbury for eight years from 2005 to 2013, having previously served as a City Councillor from 2001 to 2005. His connection to local government began even earlier, first serving as a Councillor from 1979 to 1983 before being elected as the Member for Mitchell in 1983, a seat he held for 13 years.

During his parliamentary career, David served as a Minister in the Dowding and Lawrence Labor Governments, holding portfolios including South West, Justice, Community Services, Lands, Planning and Local Government.

In recognition of his outstanding service, David was awarded the Order of Australia Medal in 2018 and was honoured as a Freeman of the City of Bunbury in 2023.

David was also the son of Evelyn Smith, fondly known as “the dolphin lady”.

Deputy Mayor Tresslyn Smith shared that David was always willing to help those in need and gave generously of his time, remaining active in the community until his health declined a few years ago.

On behalf of Council and the Bunbury community, we honour David’s remarkable service and extend our heartfelt sympathies to Tresslyn and the Smith family during this difficult time,” Mayor Miguel said.

The Smith family sincerely thanks all those who have reached out with messages of support and condolences. Funeral arrangements will be announced in due course through Barrett & Sons.
