Update on Des Ugle Park favourite: Playground Goanna

If you've spent time in Des Ugle Park in Withers, chances are you've climbed, sat on, or said hello to Playground Goanna, an artwork by local artist Russell Sheridan installed in 1995. Over the years, Goanna has become a much loved part of the park and the Withers community, standing strong for over 30 years.

Goanna's more famous distant relatives, Brother and Sister, keep watch over the Victoria and Wellington Streets roundabout in the city centre, and were also created by Sheridan.

Because Goanna is a hands on artwork that doubles as playground equipment, it has seen a great deal of use over the years. This interactive role means it has naturally worn more than most artworks in the City's collection. Our team has been closely monitoring its condition, and with safety as the top priority, Goanna will soon be carefully removed from the park.

We know this news may be disappointing for those who grew up with Goanna. Before its removal, the artwork will be thoroughly documented to ensure this piece of local history is preserved and remembered.

The City will keep the community updated as work at the park progresses.

Thank you for your understanding while we ensure this much loved piece of local history, and everyone who visits the park, is looked after properly 💚
