Ecclestone Street Intersection Upgrades and Safety Improvements

The City will commence safety improvements to Ecclestone Street at the Hands and Nuytsia Avenues intersection, and the road either side of Ecclestone Street's horse crossing area – enhancing this important route for our community’s horse riders, pedestrians, cyclists and motorists.

Project Overview

As part of the City’s Local Area Traffic Management Program, we are undertaking reseal and upgrade works designed to improve road safety for all users.

The project will be delivered in two stages:

  • Stage 1: Intersection upgrades and road reseal
  • Stage 2: Road realignment and installation of traffic calming measures closer to the horse crossing section

Project Timeline: Starting Monday, 12 January 2026 | Approximately eight weeks duration

Project Benefits

This upgrade will provide:

  • Enhanced safety for crossing Ecclestone Street
  • Traffic calming measures closer to the horse crossing to improve the safety environment
  • Visual cues to support safer driving through the area
  • Upgraded intersection infrastructure
  • Improved road surface quality

Important note for horse users: The horse crossing area will NOT be part of construction works and will remain open and usable throughout the entire project. All work will be scheduled with consideration for animal welfare and the times when horses typically use the crossing area.

About the Traffic Calming Measures

The new traffic calming measures will consist of raised road plateaus, replacing the existing median islands. These plateaus feature gentle slopes that gradually raise the road surface by 75mm over a short distance, creating a smooth transition that naturally encourages drivers to slow down while remaining comfortable for all road users.

Design Considerations

Our design team has carefully considered multiple factors including:

  • Minimising impact on trees and vegetation
  • Existing traffic volumes and speeds
  • Engineering design standards and topography
  • Creating safer outcomes for all road users

What to Expect During Construction

  • Driveways impacted by construction will be repaired or adjusted during works with like-for-like replacement materials
  • Reasonable access to driveways will be maintained wherever possible
  • Traffic management will be in place as necessary
