Corella Management Strategy

  2. Corella Management Strategy

Published 29 January 2026

With the 2025–26 Corella season in full flight, the City of Bunbury is continuing its work to manage the impact of Little Corellas – an introduced, invasive species that has long affected our community and environment.

Little Corellas are a Category 3 Declared Pest under the WA Biosecurity and Agriculture Management Act 2007.

While they may appear harmless, their presence in Bunbury has serious consequences:

  • Environmental impact: Corellas out-compete native species such as the Western Ringtail Possum and Black Cockatoo for food and roosting habitat.
  • Infrastructure damage: Their destructive behaviour causes costly damage to community assets including lighting, irrigation systems, and trees.
  • Community wellbeing: Residents living near feeding and roosting sites often experience significant noise disturbance, affecting their health and quality of life.

The City has a Little Corella Management Strategy in place, which outlines a range of approved techniques to reduce their impact. These include trapping at control sites, dispersal techniques such as noise deterrents and habitat modification, collaboration with neighbouring shires to coordinate regional efforts and investigation of new methods not yet trialled in Bunbury.

This strategy is reviewed and refined regularly to ensure it remains effective and responsive to community needs.

We know that many residents are passionate about protecting Bunbury’s environment and improving community wellbeing. That’s why we’re again asking for our community’s help.

Your observations help us understand flock movements, identify hotspots, and evaluate the effectiveness of our management techniques.

Use the City’s Community Portal to report sightings and share your experiences: Report Corellas | Reports | City of Bunbury

You can also upload photos or videos to help us better assess the situation.

We’ll be sharing regular updates throughout the season via our website, social media, and newsletters. You’ll hear about flock movements and seasonal trends, management activities and outcomes, and opportunities to get involved or provide feedback.

Corella management is a shared responsibility. With your support, we can reduce their impact, protect our native species, and improve the quality of life for everyone in Bunbury.
