Construction of the Bunbury Community Courts Project has officially commenced, with works now underway at Hay Park on the new indoor multi-court sporting facility.
The project, led by the Bunbury Basketball Association (BBA) with support from the City of Bunbury, will provide much-needed additional indoor court capacity to support growing demand for basketball and a range of other indoor sports throughout Bunbury and the South West. The facility is being developed at Hay Park and forms part of the WA Government's PlayOn WA initiative.
The project has reached several significant milestones over the past two years, including the appointment of Ochre Project Services as project manager and SITE Architecture Studio to lead the concept design. Following presentation of the design to the South West Design Review Panel in August 2025 and the development approval was secured in January 2026.
"Projects like this begin as ideas and aspirations, so it's incredibly rewarding to reach the point where construction is underway and the community can see that vision taking shape”, City of Bunbury Mayor Jaysen Miguel said.
"This facility will become an important part of the Hay Park precinct and leave a lasting legacy for the people who will use it for years to come.
"The commencement of construction is a significant milestone for everyone who has contributed to bringing this project to life and a positive step forward for sport and recreation in our region".
Once completed, the facility will provide additional opportunities for year-round participation, player development and community use. The project will also include a show court and spectator seating capable of supporting larger regional, state and national sporting events, helping attract visitors to Bunbury and the wider South West.
Alongside construction of the new facility, the City is continuing planning for upgrades to surrounding roads, parking areas and pedestrian connections within the Hay Park precinct. These improvements are being designed to support increased visitation, improve traffic circulation, enhance safety and accessibility for all users of the precinct. The City will be inviting residents, sporting clubs, and other stakeholders to view the improvements before plans are finalised. The Bunbury Community Courts project represents a significant investment in sporting infrastructure for Bunbury and the South West and will play an important role in supporting future participation, community wellbeing and regional growth.
