The Leschenault Estuary – Shaping Human History | Winter Warmer

Explore how the Leschenault Estuary has shaped the communities, cultures, and stories of the Bunbury region across time.

Escape the winter weather and hear from seasoned storytellers and experts sharing the lesser-known tales of Bunbury’s histories with our Winter Warmer program. Always different, always entertaining, all welcome.

Our presenter for this session is Chris Bishop

Date: Sunday 23 August 2026

Time: 1.30pm - 3pm

Bunbury as we know it simply wouldn't exist without the Leschenault Estuary. But how much has it shaped the human history of the region? Join Chris Bishop as he explores the connection between the Estuary's natural environment and the communities, cultures and ‘sense of place’ that evolved around it. Touching on places like Point Douro, the lower Collie River, Turkey Point, Little, Princep and Belvidere, The Cut, and the rich traditions of Noongar culture, Chris brings to life a series of local vignettes illustrating the idea that where we live shapes who we are, and that the history of a place is inseparable from the landscape that holds it.

Free entry, RSVPs are encouraged. Coffee & tea available.

Presenter Bio:

Chris Bishop has called the Bunbury area home for over 30 years and has spent much of that time with a close eye on the region's environment and history. His career spanned several State government departments, where he worked across pollution management, environmental review, and the management of large industrial and infrastructure projects on State-managed land. Since retiring, Chris has channelled his experience and curiosity into local government affairs and local history.
