Developing Your Skills: Writing Workshop

Join this beginner-friendly writing workshop to build confidence as you learn to craft stories, characters, plot and much more.

Designed for beginner writers, this three-hour workshop aims to develop storytelling skills in any genre. From memoirs to short story fiction, by the way of this workshop, you will have practised techniques aimed at improving your writing confidence and competence.

Date: Saturday 2 May

Time: 9.30 - 12.30

Location: Bunbury Public Library - Parkfield Street, Bunbury

The workshop examines:

  • How to develop your short story. Thoughts on subjects and themes.
  • Building rounded, more complex characters.
  • How and when your characters should speak in a short story.
  • Setting – It’s not just about describing scenery.
  • Short story structure.
  • Variances in Point of View – new eyes to tell your story.
  • Critiquing and being critiqued.
  • Memoir structure.
  • Publishing - Getting your story out there.


About the Presenter:

Barry Morley OAM is a writer living in Bunbury. He is the secretary of the Bunbury Writers Group and manages a memoir writing service. His short stories have won or been shortlisted in numerous national and international competitions and are widely published under the pen name, Nyema James. Barry received the Order of Australia in 2003.


Wordsmith Awards:

As part of the Bunbury Libraries' inaugural writing competition for adults, this workshop offers participants the opportunity to develop their ideas and strengthen their submissions to the Wordsmith Awards. Writers of all experience levels are encouraged to enter. Participating in this workshop doesn't require you to submit an entry to the competition.
