Waste and Recycling
Reducing waste and preserving our environment is one of the City of Bunbury’s major priorities.
The City of Bunbury currently supplies residents and commercial properties with two refuse bins — one for general rubbish and one for recycling.
A third bin will be introduced in 2013 to remove organics (garden vegetation and food waste) from the general waste so it can be converted to compost rather than going to landfill. Three-bin systems have been successfully implemented in a number of council areas in WA and other states.
The introduction of the third bin is a major change to the way waste is managed in the City of Bunbury and requires a coordinated and strategic approach. The steps in the process are:
• Garbage bin lids replaced with red lids to conform to Australian Standards
• New bright green organics bins will be delivered to each residence.
• Calendars will be delivered with the new bins to show which bins to put out each week
• Once you receive your new bin you can start to use it.
• Bright green organics bins will be collected weekly. Rubbish bins (red lid) will be collected fortnightly on opposite weeks to the recycling bin (yellow lid), which is also collected fortnightly.
Each week you will put out two bins — yellow and bright green one week, red and bright green the next week. Consult the calendar for recycling and rubbish weeks.
The new organic bins will begin to be distributed to Bunbury households from 27 May 2013. To mark the occasion the City of Bunbury is giving you the chance to win one of five waste-free entertaining packs valued at $40.

Five prizes will be awarded, with each prize consisting of a compostable table setting for 20 people, including compostable knives, forks, spoons, teaspoons, drinking cups, plates, bowls and compostable bags. All items are compostable and can be disposed of in City of Bunbury organics bins.
