A record field of 22 candidates will contest six councillor vacancies in next month’s City of Bunbury Local Government elections, while seven people will stand for Mayor.
Nominations closed last Thursday ahead of the 21 October poll, which will be conducted via postal vote. Ballot papers are expected to be sent out by the end of the first week in October.
The previous highest number of candidates was in 2015 when 18 people stood for council.
City of Bunbury Acting CEO Mal Osborne said the high number of candidates showed people were passionate about their community.
“It is very encouraging to see such a large and diverse number of candidates for both the councillor and mayoral vacancies,” Mr Osborne said.
“I strongly encourage people to vote and it would be pleasing to see an increase in turnout from the last council election, which was just under 30 per cent.”
