Racecourses Local Area Plan progresses to next stage

The City of Bunbury, in partnership with LandCorp and in association with both the South West Development Commission and Racing and Wagering Western Australia, is currently in the process of preparing a Local Area Plan for the Racecourses precinct, which comprises the Bunbury Turf Club, Bunbury Trotting Club, Stables residential area and the Council depot.

A Local Area Plan (LAP) is a forward-looking document that seeks to guide the future use and development of a suburb or neighbourhood area experiencing growth or undergoing change.

The project began in May 2017 and has included extensive community consultation by way of several community workshops.

Following on from the workshops, a directions statement and associated concept plan has been drafted with the input of the local community.

Several planning instruments are now being developed, including a draft local planning policy and a structure plan.  These draft documents are proposed to be reviewed by Council in May 2018, following which they will be released for formal public comment.

The City will hold an information session prior to the release of the draft documents to advise community members on the processes, associated timeframes and how they can participate and have their say.

Bunbury Mayor Gary Brennan said it was an important step in ensuring the community was included in how their local area is planned and developed into the future.

“We want the best outcome for the precinct and this collaborative approach will help us reach that goal,” Mayor Brennan said.

“Implementation of the project will involve a range of statutory planning processes and we will be inviting the community to come along as we explain exactly what they mean.”
