The City of Bunbury and Discovery Holiday Parks have now officially entered into a development agreement to build a community splash park.
The agreement signed on Friday 20 June will allow for the long-term lease over Lot 752 Koombana Drive and a portion of Lot 3002 Lyons Cove which has been earmarked for the splash park.
While the splash park was originally slated to open in late 2019, unavoidable delays to the process mean the splash park will now be complete in 2020.
The splash park will be managed by Discovery Holiday Parks and entry will be free to all users.
Bunbury Mayor Gary Brennan said this significant milestone meant the development was one step closer to becoming a reality.
“It is an exciting time for the City and also the community as we will now see things start to happen at the site,” Mayor Brennan.
“This project will bring immense benefit to the City both economically and socially with it activating the area and enticing visitors to the region as well as creating jobs.
“Council looks forward to Discovery Holiday Parks progressing with this long-awaited development.”
Discovery Holiday Parks Chief Operating Officer, Michaela Webster said the splash park will be adjacent to the Discovery Parks – Koombana Foreshore property.
“The shipwreck-themed splash park will be a fantastic family attraction for both our park guests and the Bunbury community,” Ms Webster said.
“We are also progressing plans to expand accommodation at the park.
“The proposed development will be a boost for local tourism.”
The City of Bunbury will contribute $700,000 to the $1.7million splash park project as well as upgrade the existing Sykes Foreshore playground and public open space by providing new amenities, landscaping and parking.
The community was recently asked about what they would like to see included at the playground.
This feedback will be included in the planning and development of the playground.
