Bunbury Water Splash Park

Bunbury is set to have its very own water splash park after Council recently revealed its exclusive partnership with Discovery Holiday Parks.

The splash park is just one of the three exciting developments associated with the partnership which will provide social and economic benefits to Bunbury.

The park will be located behind the Discovery Holiday Park on Lyons Cove and open to the community in time for summer 2019/20.

This partnership will further enhance the Koombana precinct which has undergone a complete makeover in the past 18 months including the 2017 redevelopment of the foreshore, Dolphin Discovery Centre improvements and the opening of the State Government owned Koombana Park.

Negotiations between the City and Discovery Holiday Parks have up until now been confidential, details of the partnership and development include:

  • The sale and development of Lot 1881 Koombana Drive which will see the holiday park expand its premises
  • A new 50-year lease for the existing holiday park, as well as upgrades to facilities and new glamping accommodation;
  • The lease and development of a publicly accessible splash park on Sykes Foreshore, as well as upgrades to the Sykes Foreshore area.

Discovery Holiday Parks will be investing close to $13million into developing the splash park, upgrading their existing facilities and expanding their accommodation options into the adjoining property. This will create a drawcard for visitors to experience Bunbury from a pristine location close to the CBD.

The splash park will be managed by Discovery Holiday Parks however the Sykes Foreshore playground and upgrades will be managed by the City.

The City of Bunbury will contribute $700,000 to the $1.7million splash park project as well as upgrade the existing Sykes Foreshore playground and public open space by providing new amenities, landscaping and parking.

The City has begun liaising with nearby residents and stakeholders  in regard to the project and will be engaging with the community in early 2019 to find out what they would like to see included in the upgrades to the playground and public open space.

A development application for the splash park is expected to be submitted in December with works beginning next year.

On Monday 20 November an information session was held at the Bunbury Power Boat Club for residents and interested community members to find out more about the project and to also raise any concerns or give feedback. A presentation was also given by Discovery Holiday Parks which can be found here
